In this D2R farming guide, we will cover which class to start with and why, and some of the basic things for countless runs. We're going to be discussing all details about the countess and the forgotten tower inside the Black Marsh.
Multiplayer Options
For multiplayer, you could either just get a rush or Tristram runs up to level 15.
Single Player Strategy
For single-player, we're going to be running countess runs to get experience using Frost Nova first to chill the monsters, and then static to bring down their monster's HP
Then once they are low, we're using strangling gas potions to finish them off in combination with the charging bolt that we have
Frozen armor is very nice at this stage as well if we can squish that into our build allowing us more survivability and if something hits us, they'll just straight up freeze.
We always want to have thrown on our left like to move because if you just have a normal attack you will get yourself killed more often than not.
Progression
To make to the dark wood if we find the scroll of inifis next to the treehead wood fist big bears, you can pick up that scroll and continue on. We want to have the scroll potentially for cow runs, later on for some more gearing. If we finish the Cain quest, it gives us a ring from Akara as a reward. If you do not find this, it's not a big deal we'll be back for it later.
Moving on to the black marsh, if we come across any elite packs here, this is really what we're going to be wanting to look for the waypoint and we're going to be looking for the tower. Neither of those things can be on the path, so we would recommend breaking away from the path follows the perimeter of the map, that's generally the best.
If you found the Tower First, you can TP the tower and continue on to try to find a waypoint in Black Marsh or go straight all the way to the Outer Cloister, then go back to town TP at the Forgotten Tower, find the waypoint and Black Marsh.
Town Essentials
If you found the waypoint first, you go back to town, at this point we can sell some of the items and pick up some thawing potions here because if you get hit by coal chill can be very annoying and slow you down by quite a bit a bunch of stamina a three to one mana to life ratio.
If you're running low on strangling gas potions or anything of quantities such as your tome of town portal or your tome of identify, you can sell these D2R ladder items to a vendor that doesn't already have them like charcy and be able to buy them back with full quantity. For example if we sell our strangling gas potions with one strangling gas left, we can sell it and buy it back for a thousand gold and it'll have 25 of 25.
Items To Look For
The items we're currently looking for and trying to fill out our character with are two socket helmets, two-socket shield, two-socket leather armor, or something that is not a quilted armor just for the higher durability, potentially a belt, a three socket large shield from charcy. If we can find a 10% faster cast rate one, NFCR ring, an amulet, any type of faster cast rate is actually really good to help you smoothly transition into the rest of the game.
What To Look For
We're going to be checking Shrines - check near the waypoint or waypoints to see if there's an XP shrine or a skill shrine.
Now that we're finally into the tower, there are a few things to know almost every single level there is an elite pack.
On occasion, there is a second pack on a very specific tile you're looking for this rogue archer on a pike inside a fire, we call this an l shape has a 99 chance to spawn an elite pack, definitely be on the lookout for this,
As we travel through the tower, sometimes you'll notice a glow through the wall, most of the time that actually is an elite pack, sometimes it is just fallen with the Hellfire Torches that they carry definitely want to be taking out all the elite packs that you can, some of them are dangerous such as like extra-strong archers, you may want to skip some of those until you're a little bit stronger.
Tips
There are undefiled graves, the reason why you would want to click these is that there's a high chance that they'll actually drop items. These items can include things like rings, charms, and jewelry, so always hit the undefiled graves if you're walking by them.
At this station in the game we don't typically want to keep most of our charms unless it's fire res or light res or cold res life and mana can be good as well, but other than that pretty much nothing you want to keep.
Again the sorceress is very mana hungry, so you're going to be buying a lot of potions.
There can be super chests in the tower weapon racks and armor racks and we would definitely suggest hitting those for potential items that you could sell.
Countess & Runes
Now as we approach tower level 5, one of the major reasons that we're doing the tower is for the countess - the countess drops Diablo 2 runes and these runes have a specific mechanic. As long as when she's about to drop the items players won, that's the best-case scenario because you'll get the most runes. We're going to be doing much power runs in order to get us more rune words such as Stealth, potentially Leaf if you want to go fire build - Deer runes for mana after kill, Ral runes for fire re, again that Tal runes for Stealth, any additional runes can be used for cubing rune words later. Keep gems are actually very good.
Also if you noticed in the tower level 5, there are actually gold piles on either side in Diablo 2 you do not want to pick up gold piles unless it's in your way. Again you just pick up the key items and go sell those items for way more gold instead
Attributes
At level 12 for attributes, we're going to want to have probably around 25 strength, so we can wear a three row belt when that becomes available to us either from charcy in ACT 1 or from pharah and ACT 2. Sometimes we actually like to put in 30 strength just in case we find Lazarus boots, everything else you just want to put it all into vitality.
Skills
Now for the skills we're going to be at level 12, 5 points into Static Field, the 3 points that we put in earlier from Chargeable Depot into Nova Telekinesis, Frost Nova and Frozen Armor. We're going to be continuing to put points into Nova as our main ability and use Static and Nova in combination for a quick.
Summary
On countess, low player count want to kill as many elite packs as we can that are safe enough to do so, anything that we're finding along the way from Black Marsh waypoint through the tower is great whether it's shrines or elite pack.
Remember to max out your Strangling Gas Potions, keep buying potions every time that you are in town, again town is Lava.
Always be picking up key items to sell, click undefiled graves
Telekinesis anywhere you can, use throw on left click, look out for those l shapes we're looking for faster cast rate
Don't move on without stealth.
