When we need armor or a weapon to craft a runeword, we usually look for a gray item. For example, we are thinking of a 3-socket armor for Enigma or a 4-slot shield for Spirit. However, finding certain specific D2R items, in the quality level you want (randomly elite), can be very difficult. However, we must not forget that you can also search for a normal item (white) and then add sockets manually with the Larzuk quest. Let's take the example of the Monarch's Shield and the runeword Spirit.
1. Where do the 4 slot shields drop?
Imagine that you are playing a Necromancer and you are looking for a shield with 4 sockets to fit the runes Tal - Thul - Ort - Amn, which will give the runic word Spirit.
Runes are easy to find, but acquiring a 4 slot shield is very difficult. Indeed, since you are not a Paladin, the number of shields that can accommodate 4 sockets is low. There are three of them and the one that requires the least amount of strength to wear is the Monarch Shield (Norman Shield in the original version of Diablo 2).
To find one, you have to farm, farm and farm Hell mode. However, you may first come across a White Monarch Shield. Do not throw it away, you have just found your future shield.
2. Add sockets at Larzuk
All you have to do is give the shield to Larzuk. It will automatically add the maximum number of sockets for the item. In this case, it is 4 slots. Be careful, if you need a Monarch Shield with 3 free slots, do not perform this procedure! Larzuk will always add the maximum number of sockets the item can obtain.
3. Add your runes and make your runeword
The resulting Monarch Shield turns gray and has 4 sockets. All you have to do is put your runes in the right order to create the right runeword.
We remind you in passing that when creating a rune word, it is the game that chooses the socket in which the rune will be placed. Do not panic if your second rune is placed at the bottom right. As long as you put Tal - Thul - Ort - Amn correctly, you will have the runeword Spirit.
There you go, you can enjoy your new shield! This method can be very handy if you cannot find a gray item with the correct number of slots. However, you can only request this from Larzuk three times for each character, once per difficulty mode.
